Sun Salutation ? Complete Workout for Your Mind and Body in Just Ten Minutes

Sun Salutation ? Complete Workout for Your Mind and Body in Just Ten Minutes

Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) is part of Hatha Yoga (the “physical” part of Yoga).

Sun Salutation has multiple mental and physical benefits. In only ten minutes you can achieve a low impact workout that combines both Resistance Training (e.g. weight lifting) and Cardiovascular (“Cardio”) Training.

The fitness community accepts the fact that cardiovascular exercise has reduced benefits (e.g. fat burning ends once the cardio exercise stops). It also has disadvantages like tear and wear of joints.

Resistance Training on the other hand, has multiple benefits: increases muscle mass hence more fat burning capability, increases bone density to mention just a few. The drawback: it is painful (I know I don’t like the feeling of burning in my muscles, even though I know it is good for me). Resistance training is also time consuming and it may increase blood pressure momentarily if not done properly.

A good compromise is Interval Training that consists of hard alternated with light pace cardio exercise. And this is exactly where Sun Salutation comes in. It is similar with Interval Training by combining a low impact resistance training (push-ups, squats) with cardio exercise. Even better, the benefits of Sun Salutation don’t stop at the physical level: your mind benefits as well.

Inspiration DNA-The Importance Of The Mind And Body Connection

Inspiration DNA-The Importance Of The Mind And Body Connection

Our mind is a supreme state where we’re capable of connecting and identifying ourselves with our soul and even with our godly Maker. Our mind is focused on our assorted notions and faith and is really crucial for our happiness and gratification in life while our body also understands about the physical conditions that we exist in.

Although a few trust that our mind is a state that supersedes our body and lies on the far side of it, in real life one needs to ask the question whether or not our mind can live on without our body.

If someone has the notion that our mind is beyond the domain of matter and has no connectivity to our body that we exist in they’re incorrect. Although our mind helps us understand and connect with our soul and help us comprehend our inner self and give our being a meaning, it’s essential to comprehend that our mind can’t supersede our body and dwell beyond it.

That said, in actuality, you require both mind and body to have a symbiotic relationship with the two each feeding the other and being responsible for the other’s existence and in turn helping bestow harmony to our lives and well-being to our mind.

The Age Defying Benefits of Mind and Body Exercise for Baby Boomers

The Age Defying Benefits of Mind and Body Exercise for Baby Boomers

They also the only means for achieving our true potential and happiness in our life and slow down the aging process.

As a 58 year old Baby Boomer, having always been very aware of growing old and having lived in one of the most prosperous and technically advanced times the world has ever known, I am absolutely abhorred to see how many of my fellow Baby Boomers appear to struggle with their health and their weight when I walk in the shopping centres and streets of Brisbane, Australia. Many of us seem to overlook the fact that bad health and obesity really speeds up the aging process and makes you look and feel many years older than you really are.

Since serving in the Dutch Royal Marine Corps Special Forces as a young man, I have always looked upon life as a never ending battle; a battle of the mind over the body and vice versa. Fighting the aging process in the body is also a never ending battle and demands a balanced mind, time, effort and common sense.

In the Special Forces courses of the SAS, Royal Marines SBS and Navy SEALS it becomes very apparent in the first few days of the course that the only way you are going to ever pass is to teach your mind to control your body. The other way around and you are sure to fail the course.

Pilates: A Work Out For Mind and Body

Pilates: A Work Out For Mind and Body

If you are a big fan of yoga, you may just as well be a big fan of pilates. Pilates is very similar to yoga, using graceful movements and poses to work core muscle groups in your body. I first heard of pilates when I was a freshman in college almost eight years ago when I was taking a public speaking class. The topic for one of our speech assignments was to give a speech in which we demonstrate how to do something. For this one girl’s speech, she brought in this pilates video, yoga mat and a medicine ball and demonstrated a few basic exercises to the class on how pilates was done. I remember thinking that it seemed so simplistic that is, until I tried it and found out otherwise. Pilates is actually very challenging! It is challenging to remain totally focused and calm while your inflexible body (my body is extremely inflexible) tries to flex and hold these difficult poses. Pilates is beneficial for a number of reasons. It improves your posture, strengthens your spine and tones your abs by focusing on your core. What’s even better is that it doesn’t require any major equipment; all you need is a mat or fluffy towel and maybe a medicine ball (optional).

How Pilates Can Promote Good Health In Both Mind And Body

How Pilates Can Promote Good Health In Both Mind And Body

It’s been known for some time that a good daily exercise routine can help both improve a person’s physical health and also their mental outlook as well. The body just seems to respond well to being kept in tune. But even further advancement in mind/body health has been brought about in recent years through the use of the pilates exercise method.

Joseph Pilates formulated the basic exercises that comprise the system over 70 years ago, and so the system of graceful movements is named after him. Of course, since that time many more exercises have been added and refinements made, but many of the original exercises are still in use as well.

Pilates felt that the mind and body were connected as a unit and that the mind could help strengthen and control the body’s health if focused properly. So he worked up a system of movements that must be done gracefully and accompanied with proper breathing techniques to build up the core muscles of the body and enhance flexibility in the process. His work became quickly adopted when he opened his studio in New York City and since then has been carried on and expanded after his death.
