Exercise to Confuse Your Mind and Body

You may be wondering how is confusing myself advantageous?  I have to admit I am ripping from one of the most popular infomercials out right now, the P90X.  In their infomercial they coin the term ‘muscle confusion.’  However, muscle confusion isn’t a new concept.   Before the term muscle confusion, you may have known it as shocking the body.

Change is good, especially when it comes to changing how you train.  Changing exercise variables such as the types of exercises, number of sets, number of reps, tempo, rest time, sequencing, also changing exercise systems such as funtional, core, compound, etc.  Our bodies adapt extremely quickly and our minds tend to get bored quickly as well.

Variety prevent you from plateauing as well as keep you mentally stimulated and engaged.  Once your routine becomes mondane, you have lost your passion and motivation to improve.  How many angles or ways can you do the same exercise?  Let’s take a push up for example.  For starters, you can do close grip push ups, wide stance push ups, uneven push ups, raise one leg up, one arm push ups, etc.  Now think about the different angles you can apply to the exercises you are already doing.  I have worked out for over 20 years consistantly, taking off no longer than a week time from working out.

Recently I have been thinking and playing like a kid again.  I will go to parks or any public place to see what kind of exercises I can create.
